Kindergarten Graduation at the Jewish Community Center Sunday School

Back row: left to right (we think, but if you know, let us know):  Beryl Scheib, Barry Krisburg, David Silver, David Morrison, Arnold Cohen

Front row, left to right: Brenda Krauss, Anita Moiger, the late Rena Nides

David Silver is the son of the late Sylvia Silver whose memorial celebration was held here this fall.  David Morrison, who lives in Israel, is a cousin of Mary Linda Schwarzbart.  Arnold Cohen lives in Knoxville.  Brenda Krauss Mosko lives in Oak Ridge.  Rena’s daughter Suzanne Mittleman Fuller lives in Knoxville.  Coincidentally, both David Silver and Anita Moiger Worsham live in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Barry Krisburg lives in Delray Beach; his sister Marva Collins lives in Nashville.

Thanks to Arnold Cohen and Mary Linda Schwarzbart for their assistance with this photograph.

One of the first tasks of the then new Jewish Community Center on Vine Street was establishing a Sunday School for all Jewish children in Knoxville.  The school ran for twenty-five years, from 1931 through 1956.  Board members from Temple Beth El, Heska Amuna Synagogue, and Beth Israel Congregation established policies.  Children from not just Knoxville, but surrounding areas also attended.   The first principal was Rabbi Milton Greenwald, who was succeeded by UT Professor W M Shaw, followed by Dr. Herbert Nash, and lastly Dr. David Krauss.

In 1997, the AJCC hosted a reunion of the Jewish Community Center Sunday School.  The KJA Archives contains materials from the reunion as well some photographs of students and the Sunday School Songster.  Additional information on the Sunday School may be found in The Center Menorah, the community newsletter.  The Archives holds nearly a complete set of its issues.

Send your photos (including who, what, when, where) of “The Way We Were” to archives@jewishknoxville.org, or contact the archivist at (865) 690-6343.
