1988 AJCC Preschool visit Heska Amuna at Sukkot

AJCC PreSchool Classes visit Heska Amuna Synagogue for Sukkot

In 1988, AJCC preschool classes (three- and four-year-olds) learned about Sukkot at preschool and visited both Temple Beth El and Heska Amuna Synagogue to view their Sukkot and learn more. This photo shows some of the children at Heska Amuna as well as some of the parents and teachers who provided transportation, and Marian Jay, HAS’s office manager.

Standing, from left : Carol Abeles, Sheila Popkin, Marian Jay, Laurie Lichtenstein, Joy Greenberg, Lee Hume. Kneeling: Nancy Becker, HAS Director of Religious Education.  All but Laurie and Joy continue to live in Knoxville.

Facing them: AJCC preschoolers including Michael Markman, first row left facing Nancy.  Somewhere (perhaps not all in this photo) are Sean Popkin, Mindy Cooper, Katey Hume, Andrew Koller, others.  Is that Sean next to Michael?  Mindy with the long dark hair in the next row?

If you can identify yourself, a child, a friend or a classmate in the group of youngsters, please contact the archivist at archives@jewishknoxville.org.  If by any chance you can recognize the woman standing in the doorway in the background, the archivist should award you a prize, though you’ll have to settle for her gratitude.  If you happen to have a photo of this event, perhaps showing the children’s faces, or other children and parents not in this photo, the Archives would love to receive a copy.

The Archives needs your photos !  Send your photographs (identifying who, what, when, where) to archives@jewishknoxville.org or contact the archivist at (865) 690-6343.

Thanks to Nancy and Jeff Becker, Ellen Markman, Deborah Roberts, Carol and Steve Abeles, Barbara Phelps, Marian Jay, Josh Koller, and perhaps others who confirmed the identities of the adults and suggested who some of the children are, the Menorah editor, staff, and preschool director of the day for writing about this, and the wise staff of the AJCC over the years who saved copies of nearly all the Menorah (and successor) newsletters so they could become part of the Archives and the Archivist could track down a paragraph about this event in the October, 1988, issue of The Center Menorah !
