Dear KJA Members and Friends,
We know you are feeling anxious to hear the status of Milton Collins Day Camp and the AJCC pool this summer, and we are anxious to have an answer. We had expected to have updated official guidance in hand by now; from the county, state, CDC, or American Camp Association. Since those guidelines have not yet been released, we’ve had a delay in determining our next steps. We are currently in multiple discussions with different entities and will release more information soon.
Our current opening plans are as follows:
  • The AJCC Preschool is opening for the summer on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. Class sizes are limited so that no more than 10 people, including teachers, are together. Preschool will run from 9 am – 3 pm with no before or after care. At this time there is a limit of available registrations.
  • We are planning to open Milton Collins Day Camp on Monday, June 15, 2020, pending guidance from the Knox County Health Department and the CDC. We are unable to offer field trips, overnights, or late nights this year. The camp will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Please note that no additional extended care, including pool release, will be provided. At this time there is a limit of available registrations. Staff and campers will be expected to wear masks. Families may provide their own or wear masks that volunteers have donated. Daily health screening will be conducted for all staff and campers. There will be no specialty camps, but there will be great activities, swimming and fun!
  • We are planning to open the pool in mid-June, pending guidance from the Knox County Health Department and the CDC. Hours for our general membership will be limited to the weekend this year and members will be asked to bring their own chairs. Masks should be worn on the pool deck, but not in the pool. Water will be available for purchase but there will not be a snack bar this year. Members will be allowed to bring snack or drinks for their personal consumption. No glass will be allowed inside the pool area. The summer membership fee will be greatly reduced this year.
  • At this time the AJCC building remains closed to everyone except staff and preschool (and MCDC once it opens), BUT the office remains open to email and phone calls. Please let us know how we can assist you. If you are in need of assistance please contact Jewish Family Services director Laura Berry at lberry@jewishknoxville.org. Ed Hunter remains available for billing-related questions at ehunter@jewishknoxville.org. Ed and Laura are working hard to return all emails and phone calls. There are currently no meetings, classes, or rentals at the AJCC.
We will be in touch with our camp and member families via email in the days to come. We will also post all further public updates, as they become available, to jewishknoxville.org and our Facebook pages. As always, we thank you for choosing the AJCC and Milton Collins Day Camp and for your trust, patience, and understanding during these trying times.
